Owl be there!
one of my favourite birds are owls
Just seeing them in nature is an amazing experience for me but getting photos of them is always on my photography wish list.
Last month we had some beautiful Owl sightings and I wanted to share 3 of my favourite photos.
Pearl-spotted owlet
These are one of the smallest Owls in Africa and they measure 17 - 21 cm’s in length and weight about 75g!
An interesting fact is that Pearl-spotted Owlets have two black spots with white rings on the back of their head. These look like ‘false eyes’ and is extremely clever as this helps to protect them from predators. It confuses predators about which direction the owl is facing and also gives the illusion that the owl is always awake and watching!.
Spotted Eagle-Owl
These are 43 - 50 cm’s tall and are the most common species of owl found in Southern Africa.
We saw this this beautiful Owl at the rest camp in Nossob on a nest.
WESTERN Barn Owl
Western Barn Owls are 30–33 cm in length and the females weigh about 365 g. They are slightly smaller than males which weigh up to 410 g.
We saw these 3 in a tall pot just outside the reception area at Twee Rivieren and what a sight they were!
