Book review - Our Holiday by Louise Candlish
I read this book on holiday earlier this year and it is a brilliant summer thriller. I have enjoyed all of Louise Candlish’s books over the years and devoured this one in days.
Charlotte and Perry own a beautiful holiday house on top of a cliff in Pine Ridge and have spent many summers enjoying it. Their friends Amy and Linus who also live in London have just bought the property next to them and they are all looking forward to spending a relaxing summer together.
A beautiful view, crisp wine on warm evenings and time with good friends.
What could go wrong?
Some residents who grew up in Pine Ridge resent those with second homes who only use it in the summer months and then leave for the rest of the year. The group are led by Robbie who is angry with the luxury holiday home owners and is determined to make them feel unwelcome. The group start the summer with acts of vandalism but by the end of August there is a death that leaves the town reeling.
The book is tense and twisty and told from numerous points of view. The book starts in the present (end of August) when disaster strikes, then moves back to the start of the month. The book shifts from present to past with minimal effort - a familiar style of Louise Candlish’s writing.
The resentment from the residents and frustration of the holiday home owners is palpable from the first chapter. None of them know how their summer will end and how many lives will be changed forever.
